As the Texas Rugby Union prepares for its competitive season, Arrows Rugby Football Club is starting its 6th season as a rugby club. Arrows RFC is a Catholic community with the purpose of forming men in Christian virtue through competitive rugby. While the Arrows’ spiritual formation is based on the teaching of the Catholic Church, being Catholic is not a requirement to join the club. Rugby experience is also not a requirement! All newcomers are very welcome to join Arrows Rugby.

Season Format

This season will feature an 8-match Cup Season, consisting of home and away rugby matches against Bay Area Rugby Club, Galveston Rugby Football Club, the Kingwood Crusaders, and the Corpus Christi Crabs. The top team (or two, depending on seeding) from the regular season competition will advance to a Texas Rugby Union playoff round to compete for a berth to the State Championship Tournament. The Texas Rugby Union Champion will advance to the National Playoff bracket with a chance to play for a National Championship!

Club Leadership

Arrows Rugby recently conducted its Annual General Meeting, at which Directors were elected by the club’s voting members to the Board of Directors. Brett Owens, Michael Hart, Norm Dillon, and Matt Abrameit were elected to join Paul Passino, Adam Smyth, and Eric Co; who each have one year left in their terms. This Board affirmed the team of Officers who will lead the Club into this competitive rugby season. Blake Pellerin will continue to serve as President, while Richard Pagel joins the leadership team as Vice President. Norm Dillon will oversee Rugby Operations as Director of Rugby, while Andy Maul re-joins the leadership team this season as Apostolate Director. Brett Owens and Michael Hart resume their outstanding service as Secretary and Treasurer, respectively.

Training Information

After his first season was cut short by the COVID pandemic (followed by a unique season of competitive matches), Head of Coaching Andy Hilditch is eager to get back onto the pitch to train the squad up for a Texas Rugby Union Championship campaign. Arrows RFC begins rugby training on Tuesday, October 5 at 6:30 PM at Northside Columbus Club (607 E Whitney St, Houston, TX 77022), home of Knights of Columbus Council 2917 and Arrows Rugby Football Club. Regular rugby training is held on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6:30 PM to approximately 8:30 PM. Fall matches include the Arrows hosting a Double-Header with Texas A&M and Rugby HTX (October 30), a trip to the Lone Survivor Tournament (November 13), the first Cup Match against Bay Area Rugby Club (December 4), and a trip to the Kingwood Crusaders (December 18). The first two days have been looking good! Around 30 men out each night and turning the heat up. See you soon, Brice.
