Catholic Rugby in America

Across the United States, Catholic schools play a lot of rugby. There are hundreds of Catholic high schools and over 60 Catholic colleges and universities who have rugby teams. One of two major collegiate rugby leagues, National Collegiate Rugby are currently hosting their college national championships at various levels of competition. The final leg - the Championship matches - will all be played from December 10 - 12 (2021) here in Houston at AVEVA Stadium, home of the Houston SaberCats. Not surprisingly, there are a number of Catholic schools represented! Here's a quick outline of Catholic schools to keep an eye on:

Small College Challenge Cup

Siena College (#17)

Founded by the Order of the Friars Minor (Franciscans) in 1937.

Location: Loudonville, NY

Enrollment: 3,200 students

The Saints will play College of Charleston (#21) in the Challenge Cup Semi-Final on Friday, December 10. The winner will play for the Challenge Cup Final on Sunday, December 12.

Small College Cohen Cup

College of the Holy Cross (#6)

Founded by the Society of Jesus (Jesuits) in 1843.

Location: Worcester, MA

Enrollment: 3,200 students

The Crusaders will play Christendom (below!) in the Cohen Cup Semi-Final on Friday, December 10. The winner will play for the Cohen Cup Final on Sunday, December 12.

 

Christendom College (#1)

Founded by Warren H. Carroll in 1977.

Location: Front Royal, VA

Enrollment: 600 students

The Crusaders (also!) will play Holy Cross (above) in the Cohen Cup Semi-Final on Friday, December 10. The winner will play for the Cohen Cup Final on Sunday, December 12.

 

St. John's University (#2)

Founded by the Congregation of the Mission (Vincentians) in 1870.

Location: New York, NY

Enrollment: 21,000 students

The Red Storm will play New Mexico Tech (#3) in the other Cohen Cup Semi-Final on Friday, December 10. The winner will play for the Cohen Cup Final (against a Catholic team) on Sunday, December 12.

Division 2

Thomas More University (#7)

Originally founded by local Benedictine Sisters in 1921 as Villa Madonna College.

Location: Crestview Hills, KY

Enrollment: 2,000 students

The Saints will play Northern Iowa (#9) in the Division 2 Semi-Final on Friday, December 10. The winner will play for the Division 2 Championship on Sunday, December 12.

St. Bonaventure University (#1)

Founded by the Order of the Friars Minor (Franciscans) in 1858.

Location: Allegany, NY

Enrollment: 2,000 students

The Bonnies will face Kutztown (#5) in the Division 1 Semi-Final on Saturday, December 4. If they win, they will travel to Houston to play the Championship of the winner between Penn State and Queens University.

Wheeling University

Founded by the Society of Jesus (Jesuits) in 1954.

Location: Wheeling, WV

Enrollment: 1,200 students

The Cardinals will play Iowa Central in the Rhino Bowl on Saturday, December 11.

 

Boston College

Founded by the Society of Jesus (Jesuits) in 1863.

Location: Chestnut Hill, MA

Enrollment: 15,000 students

The Eagles will play UCF in the Lonestar Bowl on Saturday, December 11.
