Arrows Mission: Arrows RFC is a Catholic community with purpose to form Men in Christian virtue through competitive Rugby.

Schoolboys Description & Purpose: Arrows RFC’s Schoolboys side is a selected team of high school-aged rugby players from the Houston-area’s Catholic Community. The side is assembled, managed, and competes in competitive Rugby on a Campaign basis. The purpose of the side’s formation is three-fold:

  • Promote and Support the Catholic Rugby Community as a whole in line with the Arrows RFC Mission

  • Provide a competitive environment in which Rugby skills are honed and Community ties are strengthened

  • Play a high-caliber brand of Rugby

Eligibility: All High School-aged players are encouraged to attend the Schoolboys General Assembly, provided that each attendee will respect and honor the Club’s Code of Conduct. The team is selected from the Campaign Assembly.

Origin

In December of 2017, some Arrows players were having a beer with their former High School Coach, and Texas Rugby Union Hall of Fame Inductee, Jim Wolfinger ("Wolfie"). He had been in discussions with a Jesuit preparatory school from the Bronx, NY, who would be touring in Texas toward the end of the High School Rugby season - they were looking for some fixtures with local teams.

Wolfie made the suggestion that the local Catholic High School teams form a sort of 'Barbarians' side to host the touring team - something that had been done before - but to host it under the Arrows RFC banner. Since the concept aligned with the Mission of the Club, those Arrows explored the idea further and with tremendous assistance from the Rugby Head Coaches of St. Thomas (Wolfie), Strake Jesuit (Bill Rung), and St. Pius X (Dave Selby), the Arrows Schoolboys moniker was born. That first opponent was Fordham Preparatory, who defeated the Arrows Schoolboys 28-10 in their introductory match in April 2018.

The team's schedule is similar to the Barbarian FC fixtures in that it does not compete in a regular league. Rather, the fixtures are set when unique experiences are explored; allowing for hosting out-of-town visitors, regional friendly tournaments, and for good ol' fashioned rugby tours - with the emphasis of forming young Men in Christian Virtue.

For any inquiries about Schoolboys Rugby, please contact us below! We are especially eager to hear from other Catholic High School teams (outside of Houston) who are interested in a fixture with the Schoolboys.
